TWO investigations will probe the cause of the Dandenong South rail tragedy, amid fresh calls for level crossings to be abolished.

Victoria Police major collision investigation unit detectives and Public Transport Victoria will probe the crash.

Cameras and recording devices on the train will be studied, but footage may be limited because of the state of the driver’s cabin.

The Public Transport Users Association said the tragedy was a wake-up call for the Government.

“We want the Government to put in place an aggressive elimination of level crossings, at least in the metropolitan area,” the PTUA’s Tony Morton said.
