ABC News: East West Link: Concerns about closure of school camp. Tue 15 Apr 2014, 12:31pm AEST
A camp in Royal Park that is used by thousands of school children from regional Victoria may have to close temporarily during the first phase of construction for the East West Link.
The popular camp gives country school kids a base in the city from which to explore Melbourne and is booked out several years in advance.
Camp chief executive Patrick O’Sullivan says schools need more notice if it has to close.
“We’ve got a huge number of schools we need to notify and they need to rearrange their curriculum,” he said.
“We’ve been told that these works [on the] tunnel are meant to commence somewhere between April, May or June next year.
“We’re up to 12 months away now so we’d like to be giving more notification to schools if they’ve got to rearrange their programs.”
Opposition spokesman James Merlino says it is another example of bad planning for the East West Link.
“First it was the seeing eye dog facility and now it’s a camp for kids and [there’s going to be] massive damage to Royal Park,” he said.
“Denis Napthine doesn’t care about local communities.”
The tunnel project will connect the Eastern Freeway to the Western Ring Road.
