ABC News: East West Link: Third Melbourne council launches court action against East West Link tunnel. Thu 16 Oct 2014, 7:42pm
A third Melbourne council has decided to take legal action against Melbourne’s East West Link toll road project.
The Moonee Valley Council voted to take Supreme Court action against the multi-billion-dollar road project, joining the Yarra and Moreland councils in opposition to the project.
Moonee Valley Mayor Jan Chantry said the council opposes the current proposal as it would involve seizing land bigger than the size of the MCG playing field from the municipality.
“Despite this massive land grab the State Government has been at best dismissive of the massive impacts this project will have on Moonee Valley,” she said.
“[The Government] has not provided council with the information we need to accurately determine how this project will affect our patch of Melbourne.”
Councillor Chantry says the council has been negotiating with the Government and the Linking Melbourne Authority for more than a year.
“Council’s legal action does not seek to stop the project all together, rather it aims to force the State Government to rethink the final design,” she said.
Victoria’s Transport Minister dismissed the move as a stunt, accusing Labor of being behind the challenge.
“What it says is that they’re out there canvassing to try to get Labor councils to join in on a couple of other councils that have put their hands up,” he said.
“But as I say it’s ratepayers’ money. I know a lot of the ratepayers aren’t happy with what they’re doing.
“In the end we need the project, in the end Victoria needs a project.”
