City of Yarra: Support for Yarra at MAV Annual State Council Meeting. 22 May 2014
Proposals put forward by Council at the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) Annual State Council Meeting on 16 May will form part of the MAV’s advocacy agenda.
The meeting bought together representatives from most Victorian Councils to discuss matters that affect Local Government and vote on issues the MAV should advocate for on behalf of all Councils.
Yarra’s Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky put forward four motions on behalf of Yarra, all of which were supported by a majority of Councils.
The motions were:
MAV representations to the Federal Government for a referendum on constitutional recognition of local government;
Processing of visa applications by asylum seekers as fast as possible, with upholding of their human rights, family reunion and work rights;
MAV advocacy to the State Government for a community feed-in tariff for solar power; and
MAV request to the State Government to re-affirm its commitment to heavy rail to Doncaster and embark on Stage 2 of the Doncaster Rail Study.
