Snap rally – No East West Tollway and/or Tunnel Protest a Success

Thursdays (17 May) snap protest on the Cnr of Alexander St and Alexander Pde, Clifton Hill at 3.30pm held to coincide with the commencement of drilling on the East West Toll Road/Tunnel Link though small was a success.

The rally was attended by 50+ community supporters of the Ycat, Yarra City Council and the Greens Campaign for the Doncaster Rail and not an East West Tollroad and/orTunnel Link. It was gratifying to see our community members, representing Ycat Groups and individual members from East to West, turn out on very short notice.

The crowd was addressed by Mary Fenelon, for YCAT, and YCAT’s position on the Doncaster Rail and opposition to Baillieu’s road plans was well received.

The protesters also included parents and school children from the local primary, which we understand is very concerned about the road proposal on health and safety grounds – specifically increased pollution, traffic, and the reduction in ease of access to the school from the south side of Alexandra Parade.

The mood among the protesters was positive and up beat – it is very evident that is a swelling of community support against the proposed East West road link and a confidence that this is a winnable fight for the Doncaster Rail.

Thanks to all of members who scrambled to get there – well done

The rally was covered by ABC, 10, 7 and 9 – as well as on 774 Drive and 3AW radio.

cheers,
Freda
