Melbourne Times: Fears homes will be lost to tunnel project (September 16, 2008)

The State Government is attempting to allay fears that owners will lose their homes to make way for the East-‘West tunnels proposed in Sir Rod Eddington’s $18 billion transport plan. The proposed tunnels would run from Hoddle Street in Clifton Hill to the western suburbs.

Spokeswoman for Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas, Fiona Macrae, said the Government was yet to make a decision about the tunnels. She emphasised that when infrastructure required the purchase of properties there was always “thorough consultation”.But this came as little comfort to residents Mary Fenelon and Lydia Macmichael, who fear their homes will go.

Ms Fenelon, who lives on the corner of Ballarat Road and Alexandra Parade in Collingwood, said residents had aheady asked Premier John Brumby for fair compensation for their properties. She has joined the Yarra Campaign Against the Tunnels and has approached real estate agents for valuations of her home. She said one agency told her to sell quickly to avoid losing money. “We’ve (more than 30 residents) handed a petition to Mr Brumby because we wish to be compensated.”
