So Melbourne will finally get a second freeway crossing over the river, almost 40 years after the first one was built. The city’s population has grown from about 2 million to more than 4.3 million since the West Gate Bridge opened in 1978 and this growth makes a sound foundation to the case for building the Western Distributor.
