City of Yarra: Council backs calls for investment in public transport. 7 May 2014
Yarra City Council, along with other Councils and community groups, will add its voice to an open letter to Premier Dennis Napthine calling for the prioritisation of public transport investment ahead of the East West Road Link.
The letter is an initiative of the Public Transport Users Association (PTUA), a not-for-profit organisation representing passengers of all forms of public transport. PTUA sought Council’s support to advertise the open letter to the Premier in the Herald Sun.
The letter will call on the State Government to invest in public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure, more level crossing removals, and improved maintenance of existing roads ahead of investment in the East West Toll Road.
In a motion bought by Cr Stephen Jolly at its meeting on 6 May, Council agreed that Yarra Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky, would be a signatory to the letter and that it would contribute $5000 to the cost of publishing the letter.
