Moreland Leader: Moreland residents to rally against $8 billion East West Link along Sydney Rd. Emma Hastings. 11 March 2014
Moreland residents will rally against the $8 billion East West Link later this month.
Michael Petit, spokesman for Moreland Community Against the East West Tunnel, said the March 30 rally along Sydney Rd would give the community a chance to show the State Government the link was not wanted.
“It’s about getting support together for people to say ‘this is the wrong project in the wrong place’,” Mr Petit said.
The rally comes as Moreland and neighbouring councils oppose the $8 billion East West Link at a lengthy hearing.
Moreland Mayor Lambros Tapinos said the council, which would present its case to the six-week hearing on March 27, wanted better public transport, a position at odds with spending on new road tollways.
Cr Tapinos said the East West Link was the “wrong solution to Melbourne’s transport issues”.
“Now is the time to be investing in creating a bigger and more sustainable public transport system, rather than continuing our reliance on cars,” Cr Tapinos said.
The Sydney Rd rally will start at 1pm on Sunday, March 30, from the corner of Sydney Rd and Wilson Ave in Brunswick and will finish at Warr Park on Albion St.
