One Vic tunnel dumped, another up By Angus Livingston April 16, 2015
Victoria has announced plans for a $10bn rail tunnel the day after cancelling the East West Link.
A day after paying $339 million not to build a road tunnel, Victoria has announced plans to dig up Melbourne's CBD for a $10 billion rail tunnel.
The Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel will run 10 metres underneath Swanston St, the busiest tram corridor in the world.
Premier Daniel Andrews said the state would fund it with the private sector, after the federal government refused to switch money from the dumped East West Link tollway project.
"I see no purpose, frankly, in continuing that argument with the current federal government," Mr Andrews said on Thursday.
