Cartoon by Matt Golding
A West Melbourne property in the path of the controversial East West Link has received a 60 per cent rates cut.
It is the first time the City of Melbourne has slashed rates due to the impact of the multi-billion dollar toll road, prompting fresh calls for the state government to release modelling that shows its impact on property values.
The $26,000 rate cut to the Footscray Road site, which is used as an intermodal yard by Toll Transport, was approved because the council ruled the freeway would run through the property. The East West Link is referred to in council documents as contributing to a more than $500,000 dollar drop in land value.
